Happy New Year Panthers! I hope this finds you safe & healthy. There seems to be a bit of confusion with the calendar, I've had many people asking this weekend. If you are using the mobile version of our website, you are directed to the WRONG calendar. I will work with Mr. Bland and our website management company to get everything updated. Classes resume Wednesday, 1/6/21 - it will be a "B" day for our middle & high school students and the HS GREEN GROUP will be in-person.

10/8/2020 ~
Hey Leland Panthers! We have officially been in session for 1 month for the 2020-2021 school year! Hopefully the kinks are smoothing out on your end - we are continually updating and trying to keep things moving along! Administration has been working towards more in-person instruction. Please stay vigilant in your efforts to maintain social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks so that we can continue those efforts. And please keep up with filling out the COVID-19 Screener prior to sending students to school!
There are no Daily Announcements for today since Mr. Bickel had an early dentist appointment--maybe give a shout out to him since he is scared of the dentist--but I wanted to send out a couple reminders:
Today is an A Day in the building and it's Middle School B group this afternoon
NO SCHOOL TOMORROW-it's Teacher Institute Day
YES SCHOOL MONDAY-when our amended calendar was approved for the late start date (after Labor Day), we ADDED an attendance day on Monday, 10/12/2020.
Seniors - reminder you have SAT practice on Monday, 10/12 - 1:00pm. Come in through the main entrance (have your Screener filled out & wear a mask) - SAT DAY is WEDNESDAY, 10/14!!
Happy Birthday to 5th grader: Camden DiFaggio today and Saturday to 1st grader Isaac Martinez! Enjoy your days, boys!!
To quote Mr. Bickel - "I hope you have a great Thursday a great weekend, and remember - Excellence Has No Finish Line!"

GOOD MORNING LELAND PANTHERS!! Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! Please know we are missing your faces just as much as you are missing ours...you are missing ours, right? Here is the first day of announcements from Mr. Bickel and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Keep an open mind, be patient, and stay flexible and together we will get through this!
https://youtu.be/sUnaQy7R5PI

Good afternoon Panthers!
It's your Friday afternoon check in from the office! We have been very busy here at school working to get things ready to begin the 2020-2021 school year! Obviously this year is unlike any other and the only constant is that THINGS WILL CHANGE!! Mrs. Moore and Mr. Bickel are constantly watching updates and altering plans to meet all guidelines and recommendations.
Registration has been open for over a week now - thank you to everyone that has completed their online registration forms either at home, or stopped in at school to complete them onsite! We have approximately 20% of our students that still need to complete registration. Please take a few moments to sign on to your Teacher Ease account and fill that out. A common error has been marking NO to your student returning if you are choosing the 100% remote learning option. That means your student(s) will not be active in our district. PLEASE MARK YES to RETURNING even if you are doing 100% remote. There is a subsequent question inquiring to the remote learning option.
Feedback from you often includes your frustration at the sheer quantity of emails from the school, trust me I get it! However, with so many variables and working gears, we feel it is best to reach out to our families on every platform we have to ensure you all receive the most up to date information. With that being said, it is VERY important to read emails in the upcoming days/weeks as there will be much information on our return to school on September 8th!!
If you have any questions or are having any issues with Teacher Ease, please give us a call or stop in the office - Mallory & I are regular office hours now (M-F 8:00-4:00)!
Hope you are healthy & safe - have a great weekend!
#patherpride #excellencehasnofinishline #achieveexcellencetogether

Check out the added job opening under NEWS!

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) sent the following information to share with district families.
SHARE WITH ILLINOIS FAMILIES TO HELP THEM CLAIM STIMULUS CHECKS
Help Illinois families claim their stimulus checks by sharing this message from Grace B. Hou, secretary of the Illinois Department of Human Services:
The passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act authorized the creation of stimulus checks for individuals and families under certain income thresholds. Most Illinoisans are eligible for these stimulus checks, though many did not receive them, leaving millions of dollars unclaimed. Get My Payment IL Coalition is available to answer any and all stimulus payment questions. It provides a step-by-step process to follow in order to receive a stimulus check. Individuals may qualify regardless if the individual has filed 2018 and 2019 tax returns, has a bank account, or receives Social Security, veterans, Supplemental Security Income, or Railroad Retirement benefits. Eligible individuals have until Oct. 15, to complete any necessary paperwork to process their stimulus payment. If the paperwork is not or cannot be submitted by that date, there is still a process for receiving stimulus checks after filing a 2020 tax return next year.
SHARE WITH ILLINOIS FAMILIES TO HELP THEM APPLY FOR EMERGENCY MORTGAGE AND RENTAL ASSISTANCE
Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) recently announced that applications for rental assistance are now available for renters who have lost a job or income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. IHDA will allocate $150 million via the Emergency Rental Assistance Program to help income-eligible residents across the state pay their rent during this national emergency. After the application period for rental assistance ends, IHDA will open applications for Emergency Mortgage Assistance, which will provide $150 million to homeowners impacted by COVID-19. Taken together, these programs are the largest emergency housing assistance programs in the nation and will help approximately 40,000 households before the end of 2020.
Help share this information with Illinois families. Find additional details and the application for emergency rental assistance at era.ihda.org. Find additional details and the application for emergency mortgage assistance at ema.ihda.org.

IMPORTANT UPDATES:
Good Morning Leland Panthers! I wanted to send out some updated information, some reminders, and a "new" district 20-21 calendar!
Don't forget 2020-2021 online registration is now open! Please complete that this week. We do have terminals set up here at school if you need assistance with it!
Mrs. Moore has made some updates to the Leland Back to School Plan Fall 2020 according to recent guideline changes made by the CDC and IDPH. The updates are noted in green. Take a moment to see what's new!
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zJVLEq7NMpzTS2kes-4O5J0KcoadIGiQwLu1PaOSNWI/edit?usp=sharing
Also I have attached an important guide for proper Mask Wear and Care that she has shared. Be sure to view that document!
Finally - the 2020-2021 Amended District Calendar has been updated as of this morning. Please note - Mondays are color-coded as all district remote learning days. In addition to RLD, students that are at-risk, or needing additional assistance can schedule one-on-one instruction (including 100% remote learner students) during these days. Two additional Remote Learning Plan Days have been added, Tues. 11/24/20 and Tues. 1/5/21. Here is a link for the updated calendar.

2020-2021 ONLINE and On-site Registration are now open! We will be in the office until 4:00 today if you would like to use our terminals. PLEASE follow all posted guidelines - facemasks are required!

Fall 2020 Athletics Information Update
On July 29th the IHSA Board of Directors announced a postponement of the fall HS athletic seasons that would impact our HS Girls Volleyball and HS soccer programs. Currently the Boys and Girls are still scheduled to start on Aug 10th.
The IHSA had restructured the athletic season to have the HS Girls Volleyball and HS Soccer season begin on February 15. At this time, all winter HS sports will remain with a Nov. 16 start date. However, sports that were traditionally scheduled to take place in the 2021 spring season will be pushed back to a summer schedule. The start dates for Baseball, Softball, and Track and Field will be May 3rd.
During this time of postponed athletic events it is important to keep in contact with your HS coaches who will be sending out information about schedules and open gyms. If you are planning on participating in any HS athletics this upcoming school year please email Mr. Zaleski at jzaleski@leland1.org.
On August 3rd the Jr. 10 board of directors met to approve a postponement of all regularly scheduled Fall athletic events for JH sports. This impacts the JH Girls Volleyball team and the JH Soccer season. Those seasons have not been rescheduled at this time but their board of directors is working to create a JH 10 athletic schedule that is closely related to the IHSA’s proposal. The Board is meeting on September 11th to approve an adopted athletic calendar.
Please reach out to Mr. Bickel or Mr. Zaleski if you have questions.

Thank you to the district families and staff that took part in our Return to School survey. Administration is reviewing all of the responses given. Along with ISBE, RoE, IDPH, and CDC guidelines, we will take your responses into consideration as we work to develop a plan that's safe, yet provides optimal educational experiences for the students and staff of Leland CUSD #1. With all of the uncertainties facing us, one thing remains constant and that is that things continue to change! We are working to create a plan for the 2020-2021 school year. As always, we will do our best to get that information out as quickly as we can, but please be patient as we continue our journey through this unchartered territory.

Please read the attached letter from Mrs. Moore regarding yesterday's guidance from ISBE on returning to school in the fall.

Please take a few moments to fill out this voluntary survey in regards to Fall 2020 School opening. Along with ISBE, IDPH, and CDC guidelines and recommendations, your input is very important to us. All of your answers will remain anonymous.

On behalf of the Leland Board of Education, administration, faculty and staff we welcome you to join us as we congratulate the Class of 2020! This year our Commencement Exercise is a virtual experience. The watch party will premier Friday, June 12 - 6:00pm. We will post the link in this event once it's available.

**6/1: Updated information regarding the playground area at Leland School.**
Please read the attached message from Mrs. Moore:
"Leland is in Region 2, which has entered Phase 3 of the reopening guidelines for Illinois. Because this includes parks and outdoor activities permitted for up to 10 people practicing social distancing, I mistakenly made the choice to post that our playground would be open. However, Governor Pritzker has specifically mandated that playgrounds remain closed until Phase 4. My apologies, and I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your understanding and compliance as we work together to follow the recommendations and guidelines for our shared health and safety."
Please stay tuned for updates as they become available.

The “stay away” signs have been taken down from the school playground and ball field areas! However, please use common sense and your best judgement before using the equipment, if you are sick or have been recently exposed to someone that’s been running a fever or showing any other symptoms of illness, please do not use the equipment. You should still be following the recommended guidelines from the IDPH. As always, with our playground being on school property weapons, tobacco/other drugs, and alcohol are not allowed at any time! Please use care and respect on our grounds!

Hey Panther fans-just giving you an update! We have been very busy honoring our Seniors! Last weekend was a beautiful town wide parade, and this week we have been holding individual diploma ceremonies! Once all of our graduates receive their diplomas, we will be posting a video of their “graduation”. It’s sure to be FANTASTIC-be on the lookout for it! Here is a glimpse of how Leland CUSD 1 holds graduation 2020!

Sunday was a beautiful day for a parade! This week our grads have their diploma ceremonies. Congrats, Seniors!

I felt it was important to honor our 8th grade graduates as they completed their elementary career and move on to high school! Just like our seniors, they have missed an important celebration of this milestone.
Please know we are all so proud of you and your accomplishments and wish you the best of luck in your high school careers!
CONGRATULATIONS Class of 2024!

Daily Announcements from Mr. Bickel - Monday, 3/23/2020
https://youtu.be/OECMKBPY-dI

Good evening Leland Panthers. I hope you are enjoying your “spring” break and all this white stuff we are being blessed with today. As a reminder, the school sack meal program begins tomorrow. We are still going to have pick up or delivery options available from 10am-noon. Please, as the governor has mandated, avoid social gatherings by only sending one person per family to pick up meals if you have selected the pick up option. It is best not to be traveling in groups especially to public places, and we really all need to do our part by following the Shelter-in-Place/Social Distancing order.
If you have not signed up for this free sack meal program, which includes breakfast and lunch items, and need these items for your Leland School students, please email Mrs. Niles (aniles@leland1.org) or Mrs. Bland (mbland@leland1.org) as soon as possible to ensure enough meals are packaged.
Thank you for your patience and flexibility during this constantly evolving crisis.

Please read the attached letter from Mrs. Moore and Mr. Bickel with an update from Governor Pritzker - 3/20/2020

Panther families - please take a moment to read the following message regarding District provided sack meals for students during this time of mandated school closure.
I strongly encourage you to call or send an email with the number of students that will be participating in the program so we can have an accurate food count. To begin with you will receive a combined sack breakfast & lunch per day for Monday, 3/23/2020 through Friday, 3/27/2020. (If you sign up, you will be signed up for all 5 days next week).
ALL LELAND CUSD 1 STUDENTS will be free for these sack meals.
It is very important that you let us know if you will be available to pick up or if you will need delivery. Deliveries will be made daily between the hours 10:00am-noon. If no one is home at the address listed in TeacherEase, the sack will be left near the door. Pick up will be available at the school by the main office during the same hours.
We do not have a menu available at this time.
I have attached a document that spells out the information needed. If it is convenient for you, please fill that out and email to Mrs. Bland or myself no later than 3:00pm FRIDAY, 3/20/2020. If it is easier, please call and leave a voicemail with the appropriate information!!

A message from the Media Center:
The Media Center will be open today (3/16) until 4:30 to return/check out library books only. After today, it will be closed until March 31st. Additionally, Mrs. Stegman will be sending out a code for all students to access Epic Books online.

A message from Mrs. Cameron to students in the music department that sold cheesecakes:
The music department cheesecake delivery will remain as previously scheduled. Unless I hear otherwise from the company, cheesecakes will be delivered on Thursday, March 19th. All cheesecakes will be ready for pick up between 2:30-5:15 p.m.
It is imperative that they are picked up between these hours and not left at the school. They will not keep without being frozen or refrigerated. Unfortunately I do not have room in my own freezers at home, and the school freezers are also filled to capacity.
You will be notified of any changes, should they occur.

A COVID-19/E-learning/School Closure update from Mrs. Moore - 3/15/2020
This morning, and throughout the day, district administrators are working with ISBE and each other to clarify requirements and determine best practices for our students, families, and staff. Thank you for your patience as Mr. Bickel and I continue to work to provide information to you that is efficient, effective, and observes the intention of social isolation to lessen the spread of COVID-19 through our communities.
Monday will be considered a teacher institute day for our faculty. By the end of the day on Monday every student will be contacted by his or her classroom teacher(s) with specific directions for Tuesday through Friday. We plan to be back in session with student attendance in the building on Tuesday March 31 per the Governor's order. However, as this situation is fluid, we will communicate with you necessary changes as we get updated information.
The building will be open on Monday from 7:30 - 4:00. Students and staff will be able to come in and get any necessary materials throughout the day. We request that they respect the intention of the school closure for the purpose of social isolation, and refrain from gathering and visiting together.
For students with lockers, please retrieve any food items or let us know and we will remove for you. We don't want any stinky surprises in our upcoming weeks! You won't get in trouble for having it...we just want to make sure it doesn't fester and appreciate your cooperation.
Again, thank you for your patience and understanding.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE FROM MRS. MOORE AND MR. BICKEL:
Governor Pritzker announced a mandatory public school closure starting Tuesday, March 17 through March 30. This affects all school programming and extracurricular activities. Use of the facility by members and groups of the community is also suspended during this time. Monday, March 16 students will not be in attendance. This day will be used for teacher preparation for e-learning plans, which will go into effect for Tuesday through Friday. Teachers will contact students (and parents when grade level appropriate) with information for e-learning assignments. There will be no e-learning days during the week of spring break. Currently, student attendance is expected to resume on Tuesday, March 31.
It is critical to understand the unprecedented nature of closing schools statewide to control the spread of a contagious illness, the importance of practicing social isolation and distancing, and the ramifications of disregarding these practices. We are working hard to ensure the best possible opportunities for continuation of instruction and learning during a time of national crisis. We thank you in advance for your cooperation, and we will continue to communicate throughout this process.

Please click on the following link for a message regarding Covid-19 and E-Learning Updates from Leland CUSD 1 administration. Any further updates will be posted on our social media sites and school website.

A Message from the Principals of the Jr. 10 Conference (this is our junior high conference):
The Jr. 10 continues to actively monitor reports on COVID-19 and follow guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health and local health departments.
The Jr. 10 has decided to postpone the Jr. 10 Spelling Bee at Serena High School scheduled for March 17th. We are evaluating each Conference event as the situation continues to evolve.
All decisions are being made with the safety and well being of our students in mind, and we are being as responsive as possible with the information we are gathering.
Leland School will continue to pass along information as we receive it.

We are closely monitoring the recommendations of the CDC, Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and our local health department regarding the status of COVID-19. We are preparing our school for the potential of an extended mandated closing. The staff has been working to develop an e-learning plan that (while not a substitute for face-to-face interaction with teachers and peers) will provide continued instruction to our students.
We are meeting with our staff again after school, and Mr. Bickel and I will put together the most current information to share with you by tomorrow afternoon.

FYI - Homework Help is cancelled today. Additionally, there will not be a Game Club meeting.

We will be having Seuss-related dress up days, staff read-alouds, and and entire school D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read) session! Reading is fun and we need to make sure our kids are developing a lifelong love of reading! 💚📖📚🐾

Shout out to Mrs. Hawk & Mr. Bland's BizInnovator Class...Al and Marcy Kinney gave the BizInnovator Class a great opportunity to try their hand at designing an ad campaign for their realtor business. The students learned what realtors do, how to design marketing questions to conduct an interview, and then how to take that information to customize an ad campaign. Last Friday they presented their designs and plans to the Kinney's and did a great job! They will now take the feedback to create necessary changes and additions for their clients. Thank you to the Kinneys for working with our students. It is relationships between school and community that make small schools so wonderful!! 💚🐾🖤

Congratulations Jim Spring!
Leland School is beyond proud of our own Mr. Jim Spring. He has been selected as the Illinois state winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Teacher of American History award!! Mr. Spring has been our High School history/social sciences teacher since 2001. Most recently, he was the brains behind a new Local History course elective for our students. He's a very active member of the Leland Town and Country Association, Bethany Lutheran Church, and spends much of his time playing and singing sweet music! Jim, and his wife Mary, live and love Leland - and that passion comes through in the classroom. I recently overheard someone say, "Mr. Spring enjoys what he does and that translates to awesome connections with the students. It's what makes him special!"
Mr. Spring will receive an award at the Youth Day Awards luncheon during the Illinois DAR State Convention in April. Furthermore, his nomination will be forwarded to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for consideration.
Congratulations, Jim Spring, on this amazing award and thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and love of teaching with Leland students!
Jim was presented this award by Deb Davy, of the area DAR organization, along with his wife, Mary Spring, in front of the high school students and staff this morning!

Hello Panther Community,
Leland School is excited to offer an after-school enrichment program for students who might need a little extra assistance on their course work. Each week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Leland staff will be available until 3:45. Students can spend time getting some guided assistance on class assignments or additional instruction in areas of need. There will be 2 different sessions that are always available. One will be for K-5 students while the other will be for 6-12 students.
If you are interested in having your child attend this additional support, all you have to do is mention that they will be attending the after-school program on our new pickup patrol system (K-5) or call the office staff (6-12). If your child is on a regularly scheduled bus route, that is no problem. The district is providing additional transportation after the 3:45 program and students will be dropped off at their regular after school location.
We really hope the addition of this program can help all of our students and families. We look forward hosting this support.
If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact me by email or phone.
